The DS remakes did a really nice job of improving the graphics and slightly modernizing the gameplay, but the old Gameboy titles themselves are quite playable, and absolutely among the best original Gameboy JRPGs. I'd argue that the three Final Fantasy Legend games contained in the Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend *are* just fine for the casual JRPG fan, particularly Final Fantasy Legend 2 and 3, which are roughly contemporaneous with Final Fantasy IV (FF2 in the US). Similar could be said about the other SaGa games: they're great but not for the casual JRPG fan. If you've got a thing for unique and quirky, albeit masterstroke in detail JRPGs, definitely check it out. But it's also super complicated, has a high difficulty/learning curve, it's overly convoluted, and almost impossible to play without a guide or FAQ open in a browser window. Fwiw, SaGa Frontier is an amazing, one of a kind JRPG that is remarkably deep, incredibly beautiful (in it's own way), and has a huge cult following. SaGa Frontier was a PSX game, not an SNES game. Zero in the graphics department, but a nostalgia throwback if you're into that.

Might grab one to check it out.įinally, the Final Fantasy Legend series is old school Gameboy RPGs. The Romancing SaGa series is also held in high regard, but I've never played any. Saga Frontier was a SNES game I could never figure out, but it's one of many from SquareSoft before the merger that is held in high regard.
